Tate's Hell State Forest

You are here Home  > Ghost Lights >  Tate's Hell State Forest

This is a relatively new state forest, acquired by the state of Florida only in 1994. It’s named, supposedly, after Cebe Tate – a local rancher who got lost in the swamp in 1875. When he finally emerged, emaciated and with his hair gone completely white, he was said to remark to the first people he encountered: “My name is Cebe Tate, and I just came from hell.”

Whether or not the story is true, the swampy portions of Tate’s Hell have seen a fair bit of paranormal activity – a ghostly light is seen in the forest on some nights. Is it swamp gas, or something else? No one knows for sure.

  1. One day at st marks which is next to the forest my dad, his friend, and I walked on the trail in the forest and had three rocks thrown at us and they came from no where. Wierd. No sound or anything. The rocks were the size of your palm.

    • If there are no rocks there… that should make it even creepier… But yeah, no, it’s not near St. Marks… soooo… that’s not true at all.

  2. I used to drive USHwy 98 from Perry to Tyndall AFB in Panama City atleast once every two months. One late Sat night I was driving down that lonesome road at 1am and seen the ghost of an old man standing on the side of the road, wearing what looked like shredded rags. I slowed down to see the person but realized he was an entity, and there was not another person or car for many miles. This was in between Carrabelle and Appalach. No exaggeration he was a glowing ghost! No one can deny my experience and I will never forget it.

  3. So why can no one “deny your experience?” A old man on the side of the road is not necessarily a Ghost, and all things on the side of the road at night glow when headlights hit them.
