A woman named Bessie M. Baxter was struck by an oncoming car and thought to be laid to rest here (though it was discovered that she was buried at an adjacent Sunnyside Cemetery). Still, people claim to have seen her in a white wedding dress wandering among the graves.

  1. After serving 2 years in the Philippines my husband and I could not get housing on the Long Beach Naval Base because there were no vacancies. He found a house on Signal Hill at 2412D California Avenue. We moved into the 2-bedroom apartment the month of December 1964. Immediately he started having premonitions that he was going to die.We were decorating our Christmas tree when he received a call from the USS Bennington to report to the ship immediately. They were headed to Northern California to give aid and assistance to those stranded in the Christmas flood of 1964 .
The helicopter in which he was traveling crashed into the Eel River. His remains were not recovered. I was moving to Washington, D.C. I had just retired for the evening and was lying in bed, fully awake, when the foot of my bed sunk down as if someone was sitting on it. I was so terrified that I turned on all of the lights, ran from the room and sat up all night. The story doesn’t end there. The next day I was moving out of the apartment when two girls from across the street came over to extend condolences and to say goodbye. One remarked: “It’s a funny thing about this apartment. No one has ever lived in it for more than two weeks. I had been in the apartment for exactly two weeks. We had been wed 6 years, 6 days, and 6 months.
