Route 520 Ghost Lights

You are here Home  > Ghost Lights >  Route 520 Ghost Lights

This is said to be among the top 3 most dangerous roads in all of Florida, the site of many accidents and deaths over the years. Perhaps not unexpectedly, people also claim to see greenish “ghost lights” along the more deserted sections of Route 520 which connects Cocoa Beach to East Orlando. Some say they are the spirits of the dead – others, just swamp gas. You decide!

  1. Yes, this area is definitely haunted. Route 520 spans over several rivers. My father-in-law, a seasoned fisherman, told of how he was fishing one night on the river and saw a greenish ball of light rapidly approaching his boat. There was no sound. It came quickly in a straight line towards him. A few feet away, the ball suddenly stopped in mid-air and went around him. In astonishment, he watched as the ball of light then corrected it’s course to a straight line as it continued down the river.

  2. Many years ago (about 1995) I was living in the Cocoa area, and doing work out at Disney in Orlando. I would drive 520 home. At the time, it was a 2 lane road with no street lights. One night while driving home, I caught a glimpse of something running alongside my car at the edge of the tree line outside the passenger window. I turned my head to look at it, and saw what I can only describe as bigfoot. It was keeping up with my car, and I was doing 60 mph. It turned and looked at me. When it saw I was looking at it, it kind of smiled, and then stopped running. I never looked back. I will admit that I had just finished a long work day, and hadn’t slept well the night before. I could have been hallucinating due to sleep deprivation and exhaustion. I have never been back on 520 since that night

  3. I grew up in the Space Coast, and for the past couple days I’ve been reading about historic Eau Gallie and Melbourne and looking for all sorts of photos. Hurricane Matthew was set to destroy the area, so I wanted to reminisce a bit. Anyway, long story short, Brevard County hasn’t been settled until very recently in human history (1920s, roughly). Prior to that, it was tourists and a hodge poge of explorers.

In any case, I turned my attention to ghost stories and came across this road. I fly into Orlando and visit Satellite Beach several times a year. I have one very weird experience on this road. I use it to bypass parts of the beeline.

About midnight in mid-2014, my wife and I were driving on this road. There was no fog, but there were no cars behind me or in front of me. I check the rear view mirror several times while driving just to make sure I have good spatial awareness in the back and front of me.

Just as I’m rounding one of the long bends, I see headlights right behind me move very, very fast. Too fast for a normal car (there was nothing behind me a second ago). Anyway, I switch lanes thinking it’s a motor cycle. Once I switch lanes, I look for the motor cycle (or car, or whatever it is) to pass me. THERE IS NOTHING! I then ask my wife if she saw something, and she did not.

I guess these are the “ghost lights” that people mention?
