Now called Chelsea Courtyards, the Carriage House Apartments are known to ghost enthusiasts for its Apartment 40. Some say that since no one has been able to cohabitate with the ghost, the apartment was used for storage for many years. Witnesses describe poltergeist activity such as things being thrown, as well as blood-dripping walls, the smell of rotting flesh, and decaying faces showing up in mirrors. However, others maintain that Apartment 40 is in use, and it is Apartment 42 that is the haunted one. A white ghost cat has also been seen on the grounds, and there is also said to be a short, elderly and kindly female spirit in the front office named Billie Boyd, who died of cancer in 1987. To add to the mix, in 2009 reports say a woman who resided in Apartment 20 was killed in an overnight three-alarm fire.

  1. Currently residing in “Chelsea Courtyards”. The fire happened at approximately 1:00 PM, The afternoon of 2009. I witnessed it. The woman that died was asleep in the apartment the fire originated in. Also, I was not yet in Jacksonville when the murder took place, but I will certainly be doing some snooping around my complex about this “apt 40” ! I will keep you posted!

  2. The fire was on Nov 3, 2009. I’ve lived in this neighborhood my whole life & I’ve never heard of a murder associated with Carriage House. There was a man who lived here in the 70s who murdered his estranged wife & then killed himself but it didn’t happen on the property.
