Tybee Island Lighthouse

You are here Home  > Lighthouses >  Tybee Island Lighthouse

The original lighthouse in this spot was built in 1736, but after storms and shore erosion caused the demise of not only it but the first three lighthouses here, the current, fourth structure was built. Folks here have witnessed apparitions and heard unexplained whistling and other sounds. Some apparitions were spotted wearing lightkeepers’ clothing, and another, that of a 5-year-old girl, warns visitors not to go up the lighthouse steps any further.

  1. My ex husband is a ‘deliverance minister’ *i.e. an exorcist) and we went to this lighthouse on our honeymoon in 1996. But no little girl warned us not to go up…we heard nothing, didn’t see anything- it was getting dark. The lighthouse had been closed a few minutes before we went there, my ex asked the people there to let us go up for a go minutes as our honeymoon was coming to an end. They did us that favor. We went up completely alone, undisturbed…The most frightening thing about this lighthouse is the interior paint. Spiderwebs, dusty, not well maintained! (looks as though it’s been painted since my last visit though!) As for haunted, I don’t believe in any of that… I saw no evidence of it here- but… our marriage ended two years later on Valentines day 1998! Who knows if this lighthouse was the reason?LOL

  2. My family (wife, 2 teenage boys, 9 yr old daughter) went into the living quarters near the light house. All 5 of us were upstairs when we heard the old time phone chme 3 times downstairs. We were the only ones in the place. My son went down and rang the phone to see if it was the noise we heard and it was exactly what we heard.

  3. Many years ago I climbed the stairs to the top of the lighthouse and my legs were so weak by the time I neared the bottom I almost had to finish the trek on my rear end. I did not see or hear anything unusual then but while I was walking around inside the keeper’s house afterward, I heard what sounded like someone continually knocking on a door. I didn’t think much about it and even forgot to ask the person working in the gift shop if the keeper’s house was haunted. I will make sure to visit the Lighthouse and keeper’s house again the next time we visit Savannah and Tybee Island.

  4. My husband, myself, my cousin, and her husband visited the lighthouse in December 2019. It was twilight out and the lighthouse was already closed so I took a picture from outside the fence. When the picture is enlarged you can see a small girl with dark hair and a long dress standing by the fence in front of the small white building with the red roof. I feel it could be a ghost

    • That might just be matrixing, but, honestly idk. I am a believer in ghosts and I am a ghost hunter, but I know about matrixing, and thats what it looks like.

  5. My wife and I were there today. No apparitions or strange noises or voices. But we did experience something odd. I am really afraid of heights and my wife is not bothered by them. We went up the 178 steps and when we reached the top my wife became very apprehensive and refused to go out on the gallery. I poked my head out and stepped out on the gallery and it did not seem to bother me at all. I walked around it twice and snapped pics. Normally I would have been close to paralyzed with fear. Weird experience.
