The Tavern restaurant was originally built in 1779. Is is said to be the a hot spot for the spirit set, including a ghost nicknamed “The Tavern Tart,” reported to be a prostitute who was murdered a client. Witnesses say she is known to pinch or grab men on the rear or stare at them from the window as they cross the street. Staff members say they have heard footsteps and seen objects like tables move when no one is in the building.

My name is Stephen Krieger, I was one of the original chefs at the Tavern upon its opening on Monday, August 6, 1984. GM was Harry White & assistant Frazier Bonham. Emmett Yeary, Mary Lynn Tate and Gayle Winston were the owners / partners. Prior to opening I knew from the get-go that this place was haunted, objects that were placed somewhere, moved within minutes. I found out for sure on Thanksgiving morning of that same year around 4 AM. I came in early to ready the first traditional colonial Thanksgiving menu, alone. It was as if I was disturbing someone who didn’t want to be disturbed. I had a radio on and next thing I know, the radio was off – silent except for foot step could be heard as if in another room, but no one was there except me. I stayed and got my menu started. This wasn’t my first encounter with a ghost in Abingdon. Before “The Tavern”, I was a Sous Chef at the Martha Washington Inn.
I was eating dinner with a friend on second floor when I glanced to my right and a women In a white dress was sitting in a chair on the farside of the room. When I looked back,she’s not there. Later I looked over again and she was there again then gone. I talked to the current owner and he said a woman had been strangled in the room to my left and that it might be her. I had never been in the Tavern before or had any knowledge of murders there. I am currently trying to find out more about the Tavern and historical events that occurred there.
