The Artisan Inn

This 1927 historic hotel is one of the most haunted in the state, but unusually, the ghosts of this inn tend to be relatively inactive apart from during the winter months. A visiting medium stated that up to thirteen ghosts inhabit the building, proving that the hotel is immensely popular with the spirit set. According to a guidebook, Room #002 is the most popular, with strange poltergeist activity being attributed to a mischievous spirit. Among the other ghosts reported are a man and woman in period clothing, a young girl looking for her mother, a prostitute strangled in the main banquet room, a worker who appeared on several occasions in the basement and a mysterious blue light that floats through an upstairs hallway.

  1. We had been staying at the Artisan Hotel over the course of 5 years (2000 to 2005) while I worked on a project for Volusia County. My wife an had had quite a few strange encounters over that time. One major encounter that took place was in Room #8. We always arrived on Sunday night and more often that not, we were alone in the entire hotel. The owners trusted us with the key and would let ourselves in.

One of these nights, I was working late at the desk on my laptop. I looked over at the door. There were two sets of shoes up against the door where the toes were sticking in the inside of the room. They were there for about 5 minutes without sound or motion and then just walked away. There were many other incidents over the years.

We arrived one Sunday night and let ourselves in the restaurant back door like we did every time. When we walked through the room, there were many people with various devices to measure stuff. The hotel was being investigated for ghosts by some serious folks in the business. Several weeks later, the report came back that described many entities in the building including 2 small children playing in the 1st floor hallway.. There was a frantic women running around the 2nd floor banquet room. It stopped for me many times and door would open into the darkness.

On the 3rd floor, room #3 was pretty messed up. My project team members who stayed there, always had a story of violent events and the cleaning lady refused to talk about it. There were others… In the basement, in one of the corners, there was an evil entity that caused many problems with security cameras showing moving chairs and violent action at times.

It was a great hotel and we always loved our visits. We got to know the bartender very well. He had some great stories about closing the place at 2am every night. I believed him.
