Mohonk Mountain House

Although rumors of this place being haunted are vague and unsubstantiated, some employees and locals claim that this hotel is actually the place that inspired the Overlook hotel in Stephen King’s “The Shining”. As Stephen King has himself stated that a certain “Colorado resort” (Stanley) was not the inspiration for the hotel, possibly the rumors are true.

  1. My husband and I visited your beautiful resort in early October 2015 for the first time. After a long day of hiking I was trying to stay awake while listening to the cougar presentation. I remember glancing toward the door and for a split second I thought I saw an image of a man in what resembled an old pirate looking outfit. Later I thought a saw a lady dressed with a white hat, long dress, and apron on coming from the front doors near the lake. There was a third image which I cannot recall now. So I don’t know if this is of any interest to you or if I was just very tired and my eyes were playing tricks on me. I did however tell my husband that I just saw three ghosts.

  2. I wanted to first say that I have never been here. But I don’t believe The Overlook Hotel from The Shinning was based off of this hotel because in the book,It clearly states that The Overlook Hotel is located in Estes Park, Colorado. So it is most likely based off of The Stanley Hotel.

    • “Some of the most beautiful resort hotels in the world are in Colorado, but the hotel in these pages is based on none of them.”

    • Grace, Stephen king was a regular there in The early 80s as I know because I was an employee. The man was the first choice of the the producers to film the shinning. Just a coincidence ? I think not!

  3. I worked here with a crew for a photoshoot in the 1990’s. There were about 15 of us, all professionals. This was one of the most terrifying places I’ve ever been. I saw a whole row of rocking chairs starting rocking together on the price, then stop. I saw a pack of black dogs run through the snow, then disappear leaving no tracks, and there was something in my room about the size of a cat, which was scratching at the wall, although all doors were locked. I had to sleep in another room with a friend. One of the rooms was permanently locked up, where a girl had killed herself and the staff saw her walking the hallways all the time. Only half of us profoundly felt terrified the whole time we were there, the other half of the crew saw nothing and felt nothing at all. It was a very very beautiful and super weird place, exactly like the Shining,

  4. Also the staff told us about Stephen King being there alot. It was common knowledge that the Shining was based on it , it was also well known about the ghost of the girl her hung herself. There was no alcohol, no TV and no radio allowed. It’s run by Quakers.

  5. Defiantly expirenced something unexplainable at first thought was the hotel was doing something. It started at 11:30 pm my daughter called the desk they send up two people after investigating they couldn’t explain what they expirenced as well (they came in twice ) After they left for the first time I made a fun of what was going on but then things happenened that I started to believe it was paranormal. Writing this gives me chills today I looked our room # , to see if something happened in it at one time., and that’s how I came across your site.

Mohok house is incredible, wonderful staff, beautiful and breathtaking property. My daughter is trying to convince her husband and his father to come on our next visit. Traveled to many places but Mohouk house is truly the BEST!!

PS. Met one of the owners and if the rest of the family is as pleasant as she is, no wonder the place
    has such wonderful atmosphere !

I had a reunion day at Mohonk Mountain House where I was meeting my son for the first time after relinquishing him for adoption 40 yrs ago.Wehad a wonderful brunch then walked down to the little beach. We were accompanied by my sons wife. The day was beautiful and we were feeling such love and joy. My sons wife snapped a photo of my son and I while he and I were standing with each other, wading in the water, and giving each other a huge and long awaited hug. The moment was unbelievable and we were so happy! When I returned home, my sons wife forwarded me the pic she took at the beach as a special momento. When I looked closer at the photo, I noted an odd white puff above my head. I zeroed in on the white hazy puff, and to my astonishment I noted two figures on a buggy carriage, one male leaning on side of buggy with black hat , dark jacket, light colored pants, and his hands in his pockets. The second figure was that of a woman with a white hat, black dress, and white apron appearing bodice. Both figures were looking directly at us. The carriage buggy was at the end of the white dock that is away from the beach.. . There appear to be 2 other individuals closer to us than the man and woman on the carriage, They appear to the right of the carriage and more in the forefront. One is definitely a man with black hat, and the other appears to be possibly a woman . The time period of dress appear to be in the 1800’s.I wish there was a way that I could attach the photo to this page. But if someone from Mohonk Mountain House would like to reach out to me to discuss legitimacy of photo, please do so. If you zoom in on the top of my head at the white puff, you can decide for yourself what you think. To some people I’ve shown this to, they see it right Away, others have to look at it a while before they actually see it. Please post your comment. I would be curious what you all think.

  7. My story happened in 2016, beginning on Friday, the Fourth of November, and ending on Saturday the Fifth, early morning to be exact.

I know because I just now searched through my calendar and email archives to make sure to get the details right.

First off, let me say that if you think you have any sort of spiritual or psychic sensitivities, this place will move your needle.

I sometimes get strong hunches or feelings about people, places and things but was not prepared for what I saw here—clearly, and at extreme close range.

Upon arrival at Mohonk, my friend and I checked into one of the hotel’s “Victorian” rooms. Cozy and well-appointed, the room came complete with a working fireplace, and a lovely balcony facing out towards the main drive snaking up to the resort.

We had fought a lot of traffic getting out of Manhattan, and I was eager to go to bed as early as possible that night. After a brief dinner, I returned to the room and snuggled into bed. I fell asleep within minutes.

A couple of hours later, I woke up. I heard a commanding, stentorian voice, which interrupted my dream. The male voice informed me, very matter-of-factly, that I was going to wake up at 2:10 that morning.

I put my glasses on and looked over at the clock. It was only 11:11. Someone’s clock is off, I thought. What a big, deep voice, sort of like Darth Vader. . . is really all I could remember from this odd little dream. I got up briefly, drank a glass of water, used the facilities, and quickly went back to bed.

I slept easily until I heard the same booming voice again, this time more urgent. He said, You need to get up! You are not alone in the room! I get chills writing this down two years after the fact. Startled and awake, I immediately raised up in bed.

With my index fingers, I pulled back the skin along the side of my eyes, forcing a hard squint that allowed me to see clearly without my eyeglasses.

Standing just at the foot of the bed was a woman dressed in what looked like a Victorian maid’s uniform. Her white apron was edged with lace scalloping, and she wore an old-fashioned white bonnet in her hair. Were the long skirt and blouse of her uniform in some kind of muted red and white checkered pattern, almost like picnic cloth? Not sure. But the white apron and the white bonnet are what really stood out for me. Until I saw her skin.

She was a black woman, and the skin on her face and hands, which is all the skin I could see, was heavily mottled with streaks of pink and white.

My first impression was that she was a burn survivor, and not just any burn survivor, but one who had survived an incredible inferno, perhaps in her childhood. But just then I remembered Michael Jackson and his skin problems, and thought, perhaps she has a really severe case of vitiligo, the skin pigmentation disorder.

All of these thoughts happened in an instant, and at the same time I yelled out “Who the F&@# are YOU?!” I reached for my glasses on the bedside table, and put them on. In that moment, I looked up and the maid was gone. My friend snored peacefully in the next bed over.

I thought, Jesus Christ, did I just have a waking dream?

Then I looked at the clock. It was 2:10 on the dot.

“Stay the F&@# out of my room!” I roared to the empty space at the foot of my bed. Meanwhile, my friend continued to snore happily a few feet away. I waited until morning to tell her about the intruder.

Just before going back to sleep, I decided to guard myself against further ghostly shenanigans. By instinct, or maybe from watching too many ghost stories over the years, I pictured myself in a big ball of white light extending in every direction to infinity.

This activity calmed me down just enough to refocus my attention towards the maid and her predicament.

I asked the Universe to help her find peace, rest and healing energy. I’m happy to report she did not visit me again during my stay.

It’s been just over two years since the apparition, and I still don’t know what any of this means. But I do feel strongly compelled to speak on this woman’s behalf.

Would you kindly take a moment, the moment which is happening right now to be exact, and pray for the liberation of this woman’s soul, even if you believe she was nothing but a dream?
