Michigan Island Lighthouse

You are here Home  > Lighthouses >  Michigan Island Lighthouse

Michigan Island Lighthouse is believed to be haunted by the spirit of a former lighthouse keeper who was killed during a storm when the heavy metal door slammed shut on him. Now, during bad storms, witnesses say the door slams shut twice, even if it is already closed and bolted.

  1. This is a lot of nonsense. As former Park Historian at the National Lakeshore where this lighthouse is located, I have gone over the U.S. Lighthouse Service personnel records of the keepers at Michigan Island. None were killed on duty; all were either promoted, transferred, or resigned. Moreover, in the 40-some years the NPS has owned the lighthouse, there have been no reports of the door slamming shut on its own. Sorry, but this myth is BUSTED.
