Kipapa Gulch

You are here Home  > Miscellaneous >  Kipapa Gulch

Perhaps because the gulch was the site of a major historic battle, the area is said to be haunted by night marchers, who carry their torches from the mountains to the ocean. Also reported here have been unexplained lights moving on the mountainside and the sounds of ghostly spirits crying under the bridge.

    1. I grew up at the Dairymen’s camp above Kipapa Gulch right before the Old Thompson bridge on Kamehameha Highway. My grandfather, who worked at the old dairy, told me he saw an apparition of a lady dressed in period clothing on the dairy road. He said that there may have been a gravesite on the dairy property but was long gone. We had a ghost dog that would come to our area. There was a legend of a man-eating large dog that lived in the gulch but we never experienced it. When my grandparents passed away, I would see shadows passing our bedroom window. When my grandmother passed, we experienced the back door opening and closing on its own but we just attributed it to grandma. My brother and uncle still live there but they haven’t really experienced anything major there.

    2. We owned a custom home in Mililani. On Lanipa’a St. – very close to Wal-Mart. Our back yard was on a ridge overlooking the peaceful, Kipapa Gulch down below.

One evening when we had a family gathering, my niece (maybe 5 or 6 years old at the time) came running from the game room. Noticeably frightened and crying that she had just seen a monster outside the sliding glass door. We all ran down to check but saw nothing. We figured that it must’ve been the half man/half dog that legend has it…lived in the gulch. Needless to say….she never went to the game room alone again.

Another time…my daughter’s teen friends planned to come over and stay up all night on a night when there was to be no moon. A night when Night Marchers are said to march. It had been announced on a local radio station. So they all came over and stayed up till maybe 4 am ….watching and waiting. Nothing. So the next night, also a very dark night, I had just gotten into bed after 2 am….when I hear the faint sound of native drums. Then I hear trees cracking and hitting the ground. Sounded like large trees. One after another. Four trees in total. The second fallen tree sounded the closest, below, in the gulch. The third…a bit further. The fourth…yet a little further. It is said that the Night Marchers can down trees that are in their path. I knew right then, that the girls had missed them by one night.

My father worked at the dairy at Kipapa Gulch when it was owned by the Costa’s and then when the Ige’s took over and it became Dairy Co. He was the mechanic and worked every evening and on Saturday since it was his part-time job. He would tell us a lot of stories of strange things happening. And yes, he did see the night marchers crossing under the bridge and through the valley. He retired in the late 80’s but we had some fun and adventures at the dairy/chicken farm growing up.
