Huguenot Cemetery

You are here Home  > Cemeteries >  Huguenot Cemetery

The cemetery is reputed to be haunted by a variety of ghosts and is one of the stops on the city’s flourishing ghost tour industry along with the neighboring Tolomato Cemetery. One of the alleged ghosts is that of a specter named Elizabeth. According to the various themes of her origin, she has been described as the daughter of a Spanish era guard at the City Gate who would often visit him and greet people entering the city or she is the ghost of a thirteen or fourteen-year-old girl who died in the 1821 yellow fever epidemic either at the City Gate or was left at the entrance of the cemetery.

    1. We visited the cemetery on November 9th. We saw several figures (ghosts) at several of the gravestones. One is the face of what looks like a man, in or on the face of the gravestone, with his mouth open as if he is crying out. We saw another figure, the profile of a woman, wearing what could be a scarf or veil hovering over a gravestone. And finally, a third figure of what looked like two people, a man and a woman, standing by a gravestone and tree. I have emailed the photos to admin@hauntedplaces.org so hopefully they will post them along with my comments.

    2. I came 2 years ago we toke a photo and on the photo was a green orb but the creepiest part is that you could Cleary see a man’s face, it was so creepy I was like I’m outta here!

    3. A few years ago I visited this cemetery around dusk and took pictures on a good digital camera. After I uploaded them into my computer, I was shocked at what I captured. At first I saw nothing in the photos, but when I zoomed in I saw many figures. There were two shadow figures of a man and woman in old time clothing, which confirmed the first comment, and I also got a green head of a man, confirming the third comment. I also got other figures and large heads scattered around, one of them was decapitated. That place is definitely haunted.

    4. Went here a few years back when the gates were open. We went in, took pics & caught a spectre. It was pitch dark & the pics were just random with the flash on. Some ppl say the pic is my shadow but how can my shadow be in front of the the flash? A shadow would be cast behind me if that were the case.
