Fort McNair

You are here Home  > Military >  Fort McNair

The ghost of Mary Surrat, convicted in a plot to assassinate President Lincoln, has been seen here, presumably trying to convince fort guests of her innocence. Building 21 has an unknown spirit lingering in spirit form. Workers here have heard footsteps in the attic and have felt something behind them on the stairs.

  1. John Wilkes Booth wasn’t hanged in the Attic. He was killed at Garrett’s Farm in Port Royal, VA. Add to that the lack of any evidence that JWB was ever at Fort McNair, it makes the claim that his spirit haunts the attic highly suspect.

  2. I was assigned to the Fort McNair Health Clinic. I’ve heard footsteps, experienced coming into work and the clock lying on the floor and doors shaking. I was there from 1993-1996. Another Sergeant experienced blowing in his ear and other unexplained events. It is real, I can attest to it myself!!!!

  3. i work at the Inter-American Defense College, which is now what the clinic and morgue once was. Many orbs, sounds, shadows, and people being touched, esoecially in the basements.

    • I was stationed at Ft McNair from 1992 thru 1995 with A Company. The basement is for sure haunted. I personally saw an apparition and drastic temperature fluctuations. Old photos hanging in the hallways would crack or fall off the walls.

  4. I lived there when I was in second grade. We went to the storage area to get our bikes. When we came around the corner we saw a man dress in black. We stepped back quickly because we did not know who it was. We waited for him to come out. The storage area had one way in and the same way out. We waited and waited. We finally went and looked to see what the man was doing. He was gone. We never went back. I will remember it until I die.

  5. My duty station has taken me to the Fort McNair Health Clinic. The clock was broken when I arrived at work, and the doors would shake and slam as I walked through them. From 1993 through 1996, I inhabited the region. Another sergeant had strange things happen, including having wind blown in his ear. I can vouch for the fact that it exists.
