The ghost of a man is said to haunt the lobby and some people claim a cat is haunting room 220. It is said there are four separate ghosts in the building, but specifics are hard to come by so you’ll just have to go check it out and see for yourself.

    1. On Halloween, I will be Streaming Live from a room in the Cary House from 10pm to 12am PT.

      • Finally, my video, A Haunting in Room 205 at the Cary House is done.

I went through over a combined 30 hours of video and audio from my stay at the Cary House and I finally completed the video with my findings! Lots of strange sounds like whispering, talking and thuds during the night. At one point there is even a strange figure in the room. Watch, listen and decide for yourself.

    2. Me and my friend live around here and we went in once and we went to the top floor and we went into a vacant room. i went on the balcony and my friend sat on the bed. the sliding glass door closed and locked. i was watching her the whole time so i know it definitely wasnt my friend. after she opened it we walked around and the door leading to the hall slammed. the lights flickered. According to other people stuff like this has happened to them. it’s haunted!

    3. The first time I went downtown Placerville about 2 moths ago I took a pic of the cary house and when I got home I looked at the picture again and when I zoomed in on the widow on the right side of the white door on the 3rd floor I could see clearly a old man with creepy looking eyes in between the two white curtains .

    4. My husband and I stayed here one year ago on our honeymoon – it’s a lovely hotel. Nothing spooky happened, though. We both have insomnia and wake at the drop of a hat – not a peep here. Nice and quiet, ghost-free.

    5. I stayed here for 4 nights, Thursday, July 21 thru Sunday,July 24,2016, Without knowing the history of the hotel at all, the minute I walked into the lobby I recoiled inside and did not want to stay! I found the elevator horrifying, my mother found it charming. When we got to the room, I opened the guest book and started reading what other guests had written. Every few pages or so someone would mention poor Stan the ghost, and how he had been stabbed to death. This grossed me out immensely and I did not want to believe it. I asked the manager on the 3rd day whether this story about Stan was true or not, and he confirmed it. No surprise to me by then, as I had a hard time sleeping every night. Even the pictures on the walls felt haunted to me. The slanted floors lent to the feeling of spookiness and vertigo. The long narrow hallways felt suffocating and creepy as hell. My stay confirmed to me that my psychic senses are alive and well, since I felt the weirdness the minute I walked into the hotel!

      • On the plus side, the beautiful outdoor patio seems free of creepy spirits, and instead has a feeling of peace and safety. On researching this hotel I learned that Bette Davis, Mark Twain, and Elvis Presley all stayed here at one time. Now those are ghosts I would have been happy to meet! On the other hand, how can a place that is right across the street from former hangings… (thus Placerville’s moniker “Hang Town”) NOT be haunted by tormented beings? Even if you don’t see or hear odd things, if you are the slightest bit sensitive, you will indeed FEEL them! I certainly did… and 2 days later I am still shaking it off! Hoping none followed me home, though I doubt it since I sense they are all very much attached to Cary House & would not leave!
