Witch's Grave

You are here Home  > Cemeteries >  Witch's Grave

The ancient, isolated grave in the Aurora city cemetery, the “witch’s grave,” has a mossy tombstone and a protruding marker, said to be a warning to deter others from witchcraft. So the story goes, the “witch” was eccentric, which was enough for the townsfolk to label her a witch and blame her for bad things that happened. Eventually, they hanged her for her crime of oddness. However, reports say the woman actually buried here was a normal woman, Susan Gavan (1842-1882), who simply died of an illness, and was buried with her 7-month-old daughter Mary.
