Tyrrell Hall - University of Tulsa

Tyrrell Hall, located in the center of the University of Tulsa, is one of the three original buildings on the campus, which predates the city itself. Until recently, it housed the university’s school of music since the university’s establishment in 1894. The building is comprised of a ground floor, a basement, and two upper floors, of which every room (with the exception of the southern half of the basement rooms) has a window to the outside. Thus, it can easily be seen from the outside after dark if any rooms are inhabited due to the lighting. The basement was frequented by music students after dark, because it was mostly made up of practice rooms, to which they were allowed access 24/7. Students who attempted late night cram sessions, however, heard a little more music than what was actually on the curriculum.

Many students have reported hearing a piano being played on one of the upper floors between 12:30 and 2am. It’s most commonly heard in the stairwell in the center of the building between the basement and ground floor. Every report agrees that it comes from one of the upper floors, however no one has made it more than a few steps above the ground floor before the music stops. Some have reported it starting once more upon descending the stairs again, many have exited the building, circled it’s parameter, and found no lights to be on, and some dismiss the entire experience as having imagined it…until they hear accounts from other students.

  1. As a child my father use to teach classical guitar lessons until 9 pm. There were many of times when I was in the basement in the piano room and out of no where multiple pianos would begin to play. And when I would walk over to them they were off and some even unplugged. But yet music was still coming from them.
