The ruins in Old Fort Park have always been a bit of a mystery. Why would the ruins of an old Spanish fort be here, where there was never a Spanish settlement? Perhaps the only one who knows the answer to the enigma is the site’s ghost. Witnesses say the apparition of a 16th-century Spanish soldier can be seen at the ruins, facing the horizon as if waiting for a ship.

  1. This park kept drawing me to it as a magnet attracted to metal… definitely many lost spirits here. As I read the signs telling the story of the old ruins, voices intruded saying that it is not at all what truly happened to burn this almost inburnable Coquina rock…it looks like it was there prior to St Augustine’s fort but both seemed to be from the same time in history.
These questions were made to ring in my mind and will not leave:
What if New Smyrna Beach was truly Ponce De Leons first stop?
What could have been able to burn Coquina rock to the ground way back in that time period..cannons only put holes….
Why was the next sugar Mill that was built built so far away from this location?
How has the old fort in St Augustine taken way more violent & malicious acts of attack and yet it still stands but this Mill was so easily burned?
Perhaps the Mill was used as protection simply until the completion of the old St Augustine Fort…and speaking of that Fort is definitely without doubt haunted!
