The Mather Miners

You are here Home  > Miscellaneous >  The Mather Miners

In the center of the town there is a small church, the post office, an apartment building(which used to be a general store) and a baseball field. Up a small connecting road is the old schoolhouse ( now converted into a persons home). Right before dawn when walking anywhere in Mather you can hear what sounds like men talking and gravel crunching as if you are right there next to it, but you are alone. On school street on quiet summer days( when there should be kids outside playing and there are none to be seen, before there was a park there) you can here what sounds like kids playing.

Many of the older houses in the towns residents claim to hear the old showers in their basements to come on (the miners shower that the workers used when they got home).

Miners died in an explosion at the beginning of the 1900s here and many townfolk believe they are still coming to and from work to this day

  1. Mather is haunted. My husband and I both grew up in Mather and I lived there up until 5 years ago. We both have family that still live there. I have several stories, but have never wanted to draw attention about them, except for family and close friends. There were almost 300 men killed in the explosion in 1929. We grew up there in the late 50,s, 60’s, and 70’s when men who survived, because it was not their shift, were still around and you could talk to them. I do believe that the spirits of the men killed in the explosion are still in Mather.

      • My family has been in mather since 1925 and I never heard any of this before. I’ve been here 43 years personally. My house has had some strange things happen but not sure about it being haunted. At some time or other someone has died in every single house in this town. There have even been a couple murders. If you do believe in paranormal activity I’d have to say this would be about as good as any place for it.

Where is Mather?..is this near Mt.Morris? I grew up in My.Morris,is the old Perry Elementary School where people converted it to a home is where this is?

  2. I recently moved in a mather home and one afternoon i heard the front door open and close ,i was i. The kitchen and my wife was in the shower .i told her i think we had a visiter and told her about the door opening and closing and she said i know we did and then told me when she went in the shower the basement door was closed and when she got out of the shower it was open. We agree it was a old miner coming home from the mine and heading down to shower ! They dont bother us and we love mather as i went to school in mather as a child!

  3. Can you elaborate on the murders that happened in Mather? I’ve tried to find information about this, to no avail. The family we bought our Mather home from, informed us about 6 months to a year after we moved into Mather, that we lived in the murder house. I grew up in the area but until living in the Mather home, never having heard info of any murders & before understanding about the mine disaster; there was no way to ignore the immense amount of weird, unexplainable, paranormal activity in our home, on our property, near our intersection, on our road. The things we’ve seen, the things that have happened before our very eyes! Thank you.
