University of Nebraska - Temple Theatre

This theater at the University of Nebraska, founded in 1869, is the centerpiece for some oft-told campus tales. In the 1940s, a student was said to have fallen to his death from the overhead rigging during a production of MacBeth, and now his apparition is said to appear during Shakespeare presentations. The ghost of Dallas Williams, Theater Department Chairman (1944-1971), was known to accent his teachings with wild behavior, such as throwing chairs. His ghost is still said to throw chairs: Folks have reported hearing the sound of chairs being thrown in empty classrooms. The ghost of a young girl is said to reside here as well, and a dancing ghost can be heard practicing his or her dance steps.

  1. In the 1980’s I was a University of Nebraska police officer and I was on patrol one night, and about 3am I noticed a light on on one of the upper windows. I thought maybe one of the late night students mistakenly left it on so I went in to shut it off. I found the room that the light was on and went in to shut it off. I went to the window to make sure it was the correct room and then left. I got downstairs and outside and looked up and the light was still off. I walked back to my patol car and before I got in it I looked up once more and the light was on again. I called another unit over and we went through the whole building, looking for a mischievous student, but the building was empty and I went up and shut off the light again. The other officer saw the light go off and when I went out to get back into my car, the light went on again. We reported it the next day to maintenence to check the electrical, since it was an old building, and they said all of the wiring had been updated and they saw no problems. This was the only night this happened.
