Sylvia Beach Hotel

You are here Home  > Hotels and Inns >  Sylvia Beach Hotel

The owner of this 1900’s historic beachside hotel shouldn’t have a problem with the spirits that haunt this building, judging by the fact that she owns a haunted coffee house in the state capital. With its stunning ocean views, a range of quirky literature-themed rooms and an assortment of ghostly tales, the hotel has a long and interesting history associated with it. Some of the paranormal activity reported here cold spots during the summer months, an eerie presence and a shadowy apparition that has been known to appear in guests rooms during the night.

  1. I do not know much about this hotel, and I have only visited it once in the 12 years I have been living in the Newport area. The one time I visited this place very odd things did occur though. I don’t exactly remember the experience, because I was only about 5 years old when My mother and I took a little tour of the place. My mother is the one who told me about what happened actually. I guess when we went there(keep in mind we had never ever been there before and I was only a small child ) I was acting very strange, my attitude was completely different than usual. I was saying this that didn’t really make sense. I guess one of the oddest things that I did though was I was talking about how much I loved this place and how I had visited it a long time ago, and I ran up the stair case telling my mom that “I can’t wait to see the Marilyn room again”. And I ran into this room at the top of the stairs that indeed was decorated with pictures of Marilyn Monroe. I do not remember this this at all, since it happened about 11 years ago(I was 5 and I am now 16). My mother would not make something like that up though, and does not really believe in the supernatural; so I believe it must have happened, and that it must have been an incredibly odd experience for her to watch her small daughter act like a wacko and know things about a hotel/museum that neither of us had ever been to.

  2. We stayed in the Shakespeare room for one night. My partner was already asleep and get up to use the bathroom (about 2am). The sink is located outside of the bathroom. As I was washing my hands I look out the crack of one of the window curtainsa and see a dark misty shadow forming in front of it slowly getting darker. I look at the other side of the window to see if it was getting darker outside or a light was dimming outside. That was not the case and the shadow was almost completely dark. I literally jump in bed now getting very sweaty and hot and see cutains moving and the shadow still there. A few hours later (now like 4 or 5am) I hear a deep growl right in my ear and can feel my ear tingle. I see what felt like the same shadow not hovering over the bed watching us but now is getting very cold.
