This cemetery, which honors Saint Roch, patron saint of dogs and invalids, is said to be haunted by a large black ghost dog. According to reports, the dog has shown up both on photographs and videotape. Guided cemetery tours are available.

We went to St. Roch Cemetery this weekend to show a friend around who was visiting from out of town. We walked into the second area and paused for a minute. I remarked that I was surprised there were so many Germans and we heard a voice say a one syllable word from about 5 feet away. We all (3 of us) looked over and there was nobody there. The voice was very muted and there was a strong echo. From the sound, you could tell it came from inside a small enclosed location. We looked over and there was a tomb that said Conniglio-Velardo. My first thought was that there was someone alive inside it messing with us, trying to scare us. Then we looked around and found that there was no way anyone could have possibly gotten into the solid stone mausoleum. The sound definitely came from inside it though. I wasn’t scared but it was extremely weird and we can’t think of any explanation for what happened. Was it a ghost? I’m not sure, I never believed in them to be honest, but I can’t think of anything else. I’m thinking of going back to leave a flower on the grave just to show some respect.
I stayed in a house less than half a block from the St. Roch cemetery last week with a group of friends. We visited the cemetery during the day but was I more observing and did not do any research on the Patron Saint Roch or the history of the cemetery. That evening I was particularly tired and not feeling well (okay, hungover) and went to bed before everyone. I felt very uneasy as I was trying to sleep, even with the lights on and all my friends just in the next room. I periodically heard what sounded like a whispering sound but I chalked it up to the fan, running toilet, etc. I eventually started to fall asleep and a very vivid image popped into my mind that fully woke me again. I saw (in my mind) an elderly black woman walking across the room with a large black dog. They were not threatening, just merely passing through the room for a brief moment. The image struck me and I told my friend about it immediately when she came in the room and a few other friends the next day. The next night we were looking up the history of St. Roch and the Cemetery. When I learned that St Roch was the Patron Saint of dogs I began to get chills and was further spooked upon learning that the haunting of the cemetery included a large black dog. I threw my phone across the room when I read that! Was it a coincidence? A ghost? I’m psychic? Who knows but it was meaningful nonetheless and I am thankful for the experience to connect with the history of St Roch.
