San Gabriel Mission Playhouse, aka San Gabriel Civic Auditorium has tunnels underground that are believed to be haunted. The tunnels were built so that the owner, Uncle John, could quickly go from backstage to the foyer. Reports say that during the Depression, the tunnels were used to house dead bodies, and when they were full, the tunnels were sealed. Apparitions have been seen and have shown up on monitors during performances. One was recognized as Uncle John. Other spirits thought to reside here belong to a little girl and a former stage manager.

I’ve seen and felt things out front of this place. My camera picked up storage anomalies in front and out back.

  2. I was outside a few years ago and felt a baby girl under somewhere like a tunnel. I also felt many monks with hood over their head walking in a long line. They did not pass until they saw a large cross being held up as they passed by……

  3. It’s all true. I used to live across the street from the mission and simply walking down the street you feel this eerie presence. There’s a darkness the shrouds the shadows. I felt it especially when I would take walks at night on the right side of the street where Spanish styled alley like building with bars are.

  4. I was visiting my dad who is in the cemetery and decided to take a little tour of the mission. There is a picture inside the church of early construction of the mission. In this picture , there is a black and white photograph of a cross that appeared that was not in the actual building. So I took a picture of it and to my surprise , there was something else there !

  5. I grew up in the mission district, would find Indian arrowheads and other utensils when digging as a kid…id always play hid and seek thru the mission grounds at nite , and would even run threw the cemetary…I’m sure there’s bad energy here from the mission days but honestly ive never seen a shadow out of place and a sound that was weird…maybe the reason was because I wasn’t looking for it…A lot of times I feel the places are not haunted but people are

I used to work here, I have seen the entrance to one tunnel (the part that is not sealed up). I used to get the creepiest feeling by the stairs near stage right. I have also seen the bar swing (said to swing when Uncle John particularly liked a show). Upstairs was also very eerie when up there alone. Back stage in the dressing room areas too.

  7. A couple of years ago my girlfriend and I dropped by this tea house across the street from this mission. I always loved the history this place had and how well preserved it was. However off the corner of my eye I see something moving. I look directly at his hallway with multiple chandeliers hanging. One of them was swinging back and forth at a pretty fast pace. I did not feel a single breeze at that time. I told myself that is could be draft however that does not explain the fact that only one of them was swinging. For that specific chandelier to swing and at that velocity there should not be a reason why the others werent swinging either. I told my girlfriend she couldn’t figure a reason why. It was a cool experience thinking back i should of walked through that hallway or better yet record it…

I remember going there when I was a little kid of you 11 years old, my cousin worked there at the time we went in and we turned off the lights and I remember looking towards the door where we saw 3 pairs of blood red eyeballs looking around through a doorway, very scary, no head no body just round eyeballs. We could hear footsteps throughout the theater when nobody else was there. Chains Rattling in the tunnel. Sitting on the stage the cat walk above would start swinging, we would stop it and he would start up again. Very frightening.

  9. I was just curious about one thing. A few years ago there was a ghost hunting team in San Gabriel Valley that was part of the famous TAPS family. Do they still exist? Any information on them?
