Sacramento City Library

The Sacramento City Library is haunted by an unseen presence, as its employees will tell you. In the library’s Sacramento Room, witnesses have described the sound of Mylar rustling or the sound of shelving or pulling out books when no one is there. Books on the library shelves seem to disappear and reappear on their own, and glass doors have closed by themselves.

  1. A man who was barricaded there was shot and killed by SWAT (and fell from the second story to the ground floor). This was shortly after the library opened, which may be why it is “haunted” or it may be due to something that happened in one of the old buildings that was there previously (and inhabited by transients, many of whom met untimely deaths for one reason or another).

  2. There are many weird tales about this very place. Reports suggest that a man was shot here and his spirit still wanders around this locality to take his revenge. During dark night hours, his malevolent shadow can be felt wandering around this place.

  3. I was at this Library today on the top floor, I kept hearing someone softly crying behind me, but when I would turn around no one was there. Creepy.

  4. Hi there, former Sacramento Room employee and the above speculation about the tragic 1993 is not just incorrect, it’s super gross. I worked with staff who’d served that patron with no indication of him wanting to cause harm to anybody and saw their colleagues murdered. People have PTSD and grief over what happened that day and had to continue working in a place where they were reminded about it. Yes there are stories if you work there about ghosts in different parts of the buildings. But none of it is some lurid bullshit about a mass shooting (which maybe we should reserve that discussion for our society’s epidemic of gun violence). Also FTR, I’m one of the people who’s had first hand experience with the Sacramento Room’s resident ghost. Employees always joked about it being another coworker, who just liked to play pranks on us. That’s how it felt to me when it happened, nothing violent or scary about it.
