Roff House - The Watseka Wonder

You are here Home  > Historical Buildings >  Roff House - The Watseka Wonder

The Roff House was one of the two houses in which the Watseka Wonder took place. The Watseka Wonder was a spiritual possession said to have happened in the late 19th century to an epileptic girl named Lurancy Vennum, who was 14 at the time. One of the spirits who possessed her for 15 weeks was the daughter of Asa Roff. During the time she was said to be possessed by the deceased daughter, she recognized all of the Roff residents and could describe items in the Roff house that would otherwise have been unknown to her. The 2009 film “The Possessed” tells the story of the incident. The house is now open for ghost tours by appointment.

    1. There are many spirits in this house. Daniel , the old man ( judge) and some in the basement that are not so nice.. I had one corner my by the cellar door, later a man had his back touched. One the basement floor the EMF detector went off when John(owner) was down there asking questions. This is a place to go when he does open houses. NOTE – this is a private house.

    2. I did an investigation at this house about 8 years ago when John the owner still had it open. It was my husband, my sister, brother, grandmother and myself. We didnt catch on camera. But we did catch many evps with an audio recorder. One of these evps called me a f—king b–ch right by the entrance to the stairs to the basement. My husband at a point in time during the night felt like he was being choked and you could here a voice sounding pleased about. I also turned on music and asked the spirits if they liked the music and captured a yes.

    3. My team just went there several months ago. Very active and the owner still rents out the house for investigations. One of our group had something follow her home, so make sure to close out any sessions before departing.
