Restaurant 1833 - Stoke's Adobe

You are here Home  > Restaurants and Bars >  Restaurant 1833 - Stoke's Adobe

Formerly Stokes Adobe and now Restaurant 1833, the adobe structure built by the Mexicans in the 1830s is said to be haunted. Said to happen in the early morning hours, footsteps walk through the upstairs when no one is there, and a child’s cries ring out from the same area. Also, employees say that the one who locks up at night will turn off the lights before leaving, but when the person gets to the parking lot, all the lights will come on by themselves.

  1. I grew up in Monterey. In the 1970’s I had a friend that was a waiter there. The Adobe was called Gallatins. The large table near the balcony that over looks the bar was where people aware of the ghosts used to hold seances. If you step out on the balcony it will feel like it’s tipping even though it doesn’t. Stories have it there was a brawl and a man fell over it and died. The bedroom is haunted by the little girl that died in it. Again stories have it, as you look into the original old glass you will see a child’s face looking back at you. This is a second floor room and has no landing outside of the windows. The kitchen at night is known for having pots and pans flying around and the top tower is known for being haunted. I have always heard there was something in the original sale of the property that the name could never be changed due to the hauntings.

  2. The first time I visited the restaurant I asked to be seated on the second floor. When I finally went upstairs I noticed nobody was on the the 2nd floor, considering the place was packed most people were outside which I thought was weird.

As I walked towards the end of the walkway towards the front balcony. I quickly saw a women with her arms out welcoming me in a warm fashion. I asked my date did you see that women he said no. I said a pray for the ghost to go to the light. After that intervention, I felt at ease.

After dinner, I told the waiter that they had a ghost in the building, she laught and said yes we do. I never knew the extent of the haunting until know.
