Old Red Horse Armory

You are here Home  > Miscellaneous >  Old Red Horse Armory

This old cavalry armory is now the housing for city school buses. There have been reports that members of the National Guard, when they occupied the building, heard ghostly sounds from long ago: clopping of horses’ hooves and jingling of harnesses. An apparition of an older man in cavalry garb was also seen in the back hall.

  1. While not my personal experience, I have heard this is true from two members of the National Guard that worked there in the 1970’s. They both said it would happen when working late at night.

I was in the Iowa National Guard 186 MP Company, 1980-1984, we were at the old Red Horse Armory for years, last to leave there in 1983. I remember we used to have beer parties outside between drill days had heard nothing in particular, etc. I also lived in the area as a kid and often cut through the parking lot on my bicycle, moped and car. Only thing was kids would be trying to break into the motorpool, and they had it posted that there was guard dogs that had died. I guess thinking about it would be kind of creepy when you wer the first to get there in the morning no one else around, or late at night, but they would often have sales there, and had the alarms set on the building.

  3. I grew up very close to it. We played in the lot after hours and often heard odd stuff. I hate to say it but once we got brave and broke in to see if old tales we had heard about had any truth. As we had always heard the horses but inside we saw some and smelled them but an old guy with very old style uniform ran after us we all felt his evil intentions. 3 out of 5 young boys had wet pants. I never put a foot on that land again. Conoe2@gmail.com
