Old Jail - Amelia Island Museum of History

You are here Home  > Historical Buildings >  Old Jail - Amelia Island Museum of History

The old jail, now the Amelia Island Museum of History, is said to be haunted by Luc Simone Aury. Aury was a criminal wanted for murder, rape, robbery and perhaps even more charges, and he was sentenced to hang on the gallows in the back. On the night before his execution, he attempted to avoid the humiliation of hanging by slitting his own throat, but he was caught and crudely stitched up by a surgeon to keep him alive. But when he was hung the next day, the stitches popped open and blood spewed onto the crowd, causing a riot of screaming, trampling, and women fainting. According to locals, Aury’s ghost has been heard moaning in the building, and his apparition has been seen with a bloody gash in his neck.

I grew up in Fernandina and had a strange experience in the Old Jail. My class toured the building when they were renovating it as the musuem. I was at the end of the line and felt a strange presence behind. I turned to see a young man standing behind me. He was about 20 with blond hair. He was wearing a prisoners uniform and looked very sad. Behind him was a shadow of him hanging from a noose. I was terrified and ran to my class in another room. I was scared of that place until I was well into my teens.
