You are here Home  > Colleges and Universities >  Simpson College - Old Chapel - College Hall

Legend has it that around the turn of the 20th century, a young man, distraught over a love affair, killed himself here. Then in the 1920s, a young woman did the same. Several more people are rumored to have met their ends in this hall, and folks say their spirits can be seen, heard, and felt here. The place has been completely renovated for use as offices, and it is unclear whether the spirits remain.

  1. My friend’s grandma lived by Simpson college. Once, when we were about 14, we were walking near the chapel and there was a window on the lower window that was full of rolled up rags. As we walked by, I got a creepy feeling and the hairs on my arms stood up. Suddenly the window was black, like someone had painted it. I did a double take and then a lady in her 20’s was in the window. As fast as she appeared, she was gone and the window was back to the rolled up rags. At this time, the chapel was boarded up. No one could get in or out of the building. I’ve never been so scared in my life.

  2. One time when I was younger I visited the college, and the college kid who took me said that one time a girl fell off the stair, cause apparently the stair didn’t have safety. She told me that at Midnight you can hear her singing. I didn’t go inside. I’m not sure about if it’s true, but that what I heard.

  3. There are stories, from individuals whom I consider very reliable, of a female ghost from Simpson College following and essentially terrorizing an individual who, as a teenager, sneaked into and stole an item from the chapel. The teenager, who was attending an athletic event, was actually followed several hundred miles to his home college, where the incidents reportedly took place. Several members of the athletic team saw the spirit, a young lady in a purple dress, but most are now extremely reluctant to speak about it. The “hauntings” reportedly ceased when the stolen item was returned.
