Mordecai House

You are here Home  > Historical Buildings >  Mordecai House

The oldest part of Mordecai House, part of a public park, dates to around 1785 and was constructed by Joel Lane for his son Henry. The name of the house changed when Moses Mordecai married Margaret Lane in 1817. It is said to be haunted by family member Mary Willis Mordecai Turk (1858-1937), whose apparition wears a gray period dress and plays the piano in the drawing room. She also has been seen as a mist hovering over the piano. Mordecai House has been featured on an episode of TV’s Ghost Hunters.

  1. We went to the Mordecai House in 2009 as a class field trip, when I was in fourth grade. When I was there, I saw the piano being played but nobody was playing it. And, I saw a mist in front of the grandfather clock. Plus, I heard a plate break in the kitchen, but no one was in there.

  2. I went there a couple years back at night…I was curious from hearing the tales of the ghost haunting the property….i approached the door and heard someone walking thru the hallways when surely there couldnt have been anyone there at the hour I was there….Aslo I began to notice the curtains moving as if someone was peeping outside….At this point I was creeped out and left

  3. i went there for a field l tripin high school. i went to the only bathroom there (upstairs) and in the mirror i saw a woman looking at me.

  4. I was there unfortunately on a day and hour it was closed. So I took a few pictures of this beautiful home. When I looked at one picture there was clearly a woman in period dress at the window but not in the second picture of same window.

Hi Patti- We’ve been the exclusive paranormal research team for Mordecai Historic Park since 2017. We would love to see this picture. Do you still have this picture by chance?

  5. Went this summer with a powerful Medium and nothing, not a soul in the entire place. Maybe they were on vacation. We were hoping to talk to the people of the house. We do know that most spirits come and go, the ones that are usually in the homes are the care takers that are mostly the slaves who continue their jobs. Theirs a lovely one at Stonewall Jackson’s home in Lexington VA. A lot of nasty ones in Williamsburg VA . Hundreds walk the streets with no purpose. The Burgundy home near the jail house has a very scary mean one. The merchants shop has the man who comes only if he feels a bad type of person in his shop. In the Governors mansion all the footmen stand in each corner in the ballroom. So we could not believe no one existed on the Mordecai property?
