Lower Well Head Farm

You are here Home  > Miscellaneous >  Lower Well Head Farm

This was the site of a series of witch trials in 1612. 10 mysterious murders resulted in the conviction and torture of around a dozen people who still remain here. Dark figures are seen outside; inside, people have reported hearing the sounds of something being dragged. A little girl is also heard crying and is believed to be that of a child whose mother and grandmother were both convicted.

I grew up in Ripponden West Riding and we used to go on Spring/Summer Walks to a Farm, (Which I believe could be’WellHead Farm Ripponden.

The Story goes that a young Woman who I believe was called ‘Charlotte?
Took a position as a Nanny/Housekeeper at the Farm to take Charge of the Children.

One Summer the Family all took a 6 week Summer break, Though Charlotte remained at the Farm to take care of the chores while the Family were away.

One hot Summers day, Charlotte was thirsty and hungry so she went to the pantry to seek out food and drink from the pantry.

While Charlotte was in the pantry the door to the Pantry closed and locked on her.

On the Families return 6 weeks later the Lady of the house went to the Pantry, Where she discovered Charlottes lifeless body.
(Whether this is myth or it really happened I’m not certain.

However, I have put a post on ‘Ripponden Memories’ , On Facebook and one of my Friends replied to it.

She remembers the story and said that a Historian confirmed that this poor soul was actually called, ‘The Grey Lady.
