A spooky story surrounds the statue of the Confederate Hero, dedicated Oct. 11, 1900, on High Street. Legend has it that when you can see the statue’s shadow on the wall of the camupus’ East Ruffner Building, all is well. When you cannot, the soldier’s ghost is out protecting the town with his rifle, and something bad will happen. In 2001 the East Ruffner Building was destroyed in a fire, and a photo was taken during the fire showing a ghostly soldier’s silhouette in the flames. Now the building has been reconstructed, and the soldier’s shadow can be seen again.

At the Tabb dormitory, a ghost is said to warn students of impending doom with a woman’s shrieking voice.

At Jarman Auditorium, the ghost of namesake university president Dr. Jarman has a reserved seat, filled for every event with a program and a red rose. If these items are overlooked, the light and sound boards tend to act up.

And Curry Hall is said to be haunted by the ghost of a 3-year-old boy who rode a bike into the elevator shaft and fell to his death. A campus rumor says those who ride to the 10th floor and then directly to the basement will come face to face with his ghost.

  1. As far as the Longwood ghost goes, it’s Frasier and Curry that’s haunted. Boy died when he fell from the 3rd floor, the same floor that caught fire in 1986/87

I lived in French in 07 before they reconstructed the building to the IT center or whatever it is now. I lived on the 3rd floor. Both my roommate and I had experiences waking up in the middle of the night by a man with a goatee and we saw orbs all the time.

  3. I lived on 3rd floor N. Cunningham in 1981 in the corner room at the middle stairway. One night I was alone sleeping around 3am when a loud tapping on the hallway wall woke me up. Thinking it was a prank, I jumped up, opened my door and the hallway was empty. I went around corner to a connecting hall and saw no one. I even went all the way down the stairway to 1st floor, also empty. Never did find an explanation.
