Herman Helms House

You are here Home  > Historical Buildings >  Herman Helms House

Two ghosts can be seen in this old wooden-framed house, which dates back to 1862. The first is an elderly that walks around the house crying. She is believed to be the late August Helms, who witnessed many murders and suicides in the Helms family before her eventual death in the late 1800’s. The second is that of a little girl, who sits at the bottom of the staircase and weeps. She died of smallpox in 1868 and was buried nearby, but she still refuses to part with the house.

  1. The children who died of smallpox were buried in the back of the house. At a much later date, the house was added on and the new room covered the gravesite. It was said that no one could sleep in those rooms and children could be heard crying. When the owners discovered that the graves were there, they had a priest exhume the bodies and bury them near their parents in the local grave. After that, there were no more incidents of crying heard. It’s rumored that the tombstones are still in the basement of the home.
