Golden North Hotel

You are here Home  > Restaurants and Bars >  Golden North Hotel

The Golden North Hotel is no longer operating as a hotel. There is a restaurant and bar on the first floor but the hotel portion is closed. If it were still in operation however, you might have checked in to room 23 which is reportedly haunted by a ghost called “Scary Mary” who died in the room. Reports differ on how exactly she manifests, some say they hear her and others that she is an apparition that appears in both the room and the hallways.

  1. When I was a young girl my girl scout troop and I stayed here for a night or two. We stayed in room 23 the “scary mary” room, we did not experience anything paranormal while we were there. I really wanted to though so it was a disappointment.

  2. When I was 16 or 17, my parents and I stayed here in room 23. In the room, if I recall correctly, there were 2 beds and a vanity table with chair and mirror in the room. I happened to wake up in the middle of the night and roll over. When I did, I opened my eyes and I saw a mist in the shape of a woman sitting at the vanity. It didn’t make me feel scared or uneasy. I just found it strange and turned over and went back to sleep. The next morning I told my parents about it and my dad said he felt something tugging at his feet as well.

  3. My wife and I stayed in this room 23 six years ago. One night I was awoke around 2:30 in the morning because I was very cold.As I reached over to grab the covers, I saw what appeared to be a woman standing at the foot of the bed. I looked at my wife and she was sound asleep. I then asked the ghost,”Are you scary Mary?” She replied,”No, I’m crazy Larry!” She then began to vanish very slowly. I told me wife the next morning, but I get the feeling that she didn’t believe me. Isn’t that scary…Mary?

  4. This hotel was built during the gold rush and has a rich history. While doing work for the owner, I stayed one night in the hotel. Can’t recall the room number. I was alone in the building. Alone. No other guests. No employees. About 2 in the morning I felt someone was in my room. A woman. Then I felt pressure on my chest like she was sitting on me to stop my breathing. I yelled No. And the presence left. 14 years later I question if it really happened or did I dream it.
