Calvin Phillips Mausoleum - Oakland Cemetery

You are here Home  > Cemeteries >  Calvin Phillips Mausoleum - Oakland Cemetery

Calvin Phillips built himself the first, and most famous, mausoleum in Oakland Cemetery in 1900. He hired a master carpenter to make a cherry-wood casket in the mausoleum, and when it was finished, he crawled inside, locked the door behind him and died. No one is exactly sure why he did this, but some locals claim to have paranormal experiences in the area immediately surrounding the strange mausoleum.

    1. You’re not using the device correctly … you have to hold it down with those. When you let go, it turns off and the second light blinks … hate to break it to ya. Glad to see you at found a new friend to talk to

    2. I went there on 4/25/15 and it sat right under a tree made it so very beautiful it was quite bigger than expected it to be. I did notice my phone started to lose battery. And the pictures became slower to take. But other than that didn’t notice anything else. But this guy Calvin C. Philips was a private man from what I’ve read about him. The mausoleum could actually hold 4 other caskets. His untimely death soon after it was finished built which is a huge mystery. But it was a suicide the guy next to him Hodges I believe is the one that helped him build it and Philips told him how he wanted his body positioned inside the casket.

    3. This story is inaccurate. Mr Phillips was an architect, and designed his mausoleum in a mesh of several styles famous across the world. He was pretty weird, he would go and take naps inside of it while it was being built, and would often scare the builders when they would see him inside. This is where the story comes to be about him going inside and dying. He died at home, peacefully.
