Brougham Hall

You are here Home  > Historical Buildings >  Brougham Hall

The hall and grounds are reportedly haunted by sounds of soldiers battling in the middle night, world war soldiers marching and various people who were employed at the property including a woman called Emily and a boy who died there. Henry Brougham who lived there in the nineteenth century was reported to be highly interested in spirituality and his spirit and that of his brother William are also said to have been felt by visitors.

Previous investigators have not lasted the night here due to some of the unnerving sights and sounds. A table has been said to have moved across a room and a rocking chair move on its own. There have also been the sounds of battle and there is said to be a ghostly monk who wanders with murderous intent…….

Brougham Hall is located just a mile south of Penrith and was built in the 14th century and rescued from dereliction in 1985, it is now the largest county house restoration project in England.

  1. Had a horrible experience in…of all places…the ladies loo! The cubicles don’t have any windows, and the light switch is next to the toilet when you go inside. I turned on the light, and closed the door. I sat down, thinking how awful it would be to be in there in the dark. After about a minute the light went off and I was plunged into darkness. Heart pounding, I slapped my hand on the switch to turn it back on. And it happened again, but after only about ten seconds. So I turned it on again, keeping my hand on the switch to keep it on. Even with my hand on it, the light went off after about two seconds. Was out of there like a shot!
