A 1987 shootout is said to have spawned the haunting of this courthouse. The elevator works erratically, disembodied footsteps can be heard running on the catwalk that connects the courtroom to the jail, and lights are said to flash in the judge’s chambers, where the shooting started. Three people were killed during the shootout, and local lore says it is their ghosts that linger here.

  1. The building in Wewa is the “old courthouse”. The county seat was moved from Wewahitchka to Port St. Joe in 1965. The shootings took place in the “new courthouse” in Port St. Joe.

  2. There were weird happenings at this courthouse, including the elevator acting of its own accord when it was still active, and an overall ominous feeling that seemed to emanate from the basement when I used to visit. However, the shooting mentioned did happen at the St. Joe location rather than the Wewahitchka location.

  3. This courthouse had the most unsettled feeling you could feel. Its heavy and extremely uncomfortable. My friends and I used to go there for 4-H meetings and everytime we tried to go to the bathroom the water machine woud just randomly click on. Also, many times we woud look up at where the holding cells would be and there would seem as if a person was up there staring back at you. One time, my friend looked up in that direction and his face went totally blank. I asked him whats wrong and he just pointed to the direction and i swear there was a person looking at us!! I will never look back up there
