Originally constructed in 1892 after the county seat moved to Scottsburg, the building served for many years as the district poor farm. During conversion to house the historical society, staff and workers allegedly encountered resistance of a paranormal kind. Visitors have reported hearing babies crying, disembodied footsteps on the second floor and unusual scents that come and go. On one occasion, an employee who locked up for the night witnessed all the lights in the building turn on again, despite the fact that the place was empty. The museum now offers private ghost tours.
