This church, the first Catholic church in Rhode Island, was cursed by the Protestants who threatened that the one who broke ground on it would be doomed to lie beneath it forever. That person was the original builder’s wife, Mary. Her ghost is still said to haunt the church, turning on and off lights, blowing out candles, and moving items from place to place. She is a friendly ghost and is reported to be accepted as a member of the congregation by the parishioners and priests.
