Silver Lake

The ghost of Sally Weir is said to haunt Silver Lake, also known as Mattakeunk Pond. Sally was a maid and prostitute in the late 1800s who was brutally murdered. There are varying accounts of the circumstances surrounding the crime. Some say Sally’s ghost haunts the area waiting for her murder to be solved; others say her spirit is restless because of the brutal crime and the fact that her body was not properly buried. Still another account says she is upset because her head, kept by the police for evidence, was never restored to her body.

  1. Yes! I had a big problem on Silver Lake.
I’d never heard any stories about the lake being haunted when I invited my boyfriend to go Kayaking there, so we set out expecting a fun filled day. After being out on the water for about 20 minutes, I felt a sudden impact on the bottom of my boat. My boyfriend wasn’t having any problems so I thought I must’ve hit a submerged tree limb. The current was strong and after paddling for a very long time we got rather discouraged when we noticed we weren’t making any headway. Tired, we turned around and made for the shore. Boom! another heavy impact under my boat. We laughed it off talking about turtles, tree limbs, giant pissed off fish – however, after this happening SEVERAL MORE TIMES I was actually terrified that something more sinister was coming after me.I paddled like a mad woman to get back to the shore. I WILL NEVER EVER GO TO SILVER LAKE AGAIN.

  2. I grew up in Bucksport. Much of my childhood was spent canoeing or fishing those waters in the warmer months. I also went sledding , skating and riding ATV ‘s when it was frozen. My high school track team used to run out there as well. I never once experienced anything unusual on or near Silver Lake.
