Local legend tells of many strange things that have happened nearby, perhaps the first being a small wagon train that was demolished during the California Gold Rush. Then in the 1900s when the Fallbrook Union High School was built nearby, three pairs of teens disappeared from their prom only to turn up drowned in the river. Locals say anything can happen here after dark, so beware.

    A little recent history--probably no ghosts involved though. Then again--who knows?

    An ex girlfriend's brother's child was killed where De Luz road used to go through the water near the fork of De Luz and Sandia Creek roads. The car slid into the water. This was probably 20-odd years ago, and was in the paper at the time. On Sandia Creek, the right hand fork there, there were washouts 15-20 feet deep by over 10 feet across up into the 70's and 80' or so. This has always been a dangerous place in the rainy season. Again from the paper back then, an overturned camper was found at that point with 125 kilos of pot under the shell. the driver was never found.
    Have fun, there are a few remaining (I hope) very old houses out in De Luz, lots of smuggling happened there, and a lot of history that is not on Google. Or, if it is, I missed it there.

    Driving North(ish) on De Luz Road to a mailbox that used to be marked as the 'Keys' place, and then walking South up the dry creek bed along the West side of De Luz, a canyon went off on the right into Camp Pendleton. There are the remains of the Bessie Smith house. I cant remember the distances, but the whole thing was a ~30 minute walk one way.

    Legend has it that President Roosevelt deeded the public property to his long time nurse, Bessie Smith. The house ruins were still there some years ago, along with some durable personal and kitchen items. Also a large bank of small (can't remember size) batteries sat in a small wooden structure to the West of the house. It looked like a primitive solar system of some sort. I remember the ruins, the junk scattered around, the batteries, and a lot of faded white paint. This was in the mid 70's.

    The brick building, OLD location of Enterprise newspaper on Main street, now a restaurant or bakery-an employee of the paper told me she has seen a woman and young girl ghost there. It is located next door and south of wells fargo. I believe its listed in a haunted places book i bought at the winchester mustery house also.
