Riverside Cemetery

Riverside Cemetery has more than 13,000 graves, including authors Thomas Wolfe and William Sydney Porter (O. Henry) and influential politician Zebulon Baird Vance. Witnesses have heard gunfire and seen a phantom Confederate army marching here, perhaps toward the site of the 1865 Battle of Asheville, fought a mile away on the current site of the University of North Carolina at Asheville’s Botanical Gardens.

  1. I used to have a co-worker that once worked for a funeral home. He was at Riverside cemetery for a jewish funeral once that had each person cast a shovel of dirt into the grave. He said by the time he left it was dark and he had the headlights on as he was finishing up and the mourners had left. He said that he could see shadows of people walking around were there weren’t any people.

  2. While in grad school, I was helping to guide an under-grad history group in the cemetary. While trapsing up the hill toward to front gate I saw a full bodied apparition of a man standing over and looking down at a grave. He was white abd grey, had a beard and suspenders. He lingered for just a second and vanished. He never looked up at me. It made a believer out of me and I am a little freaked
out to this day! I’m only sorry no one else him too.

  3. My boyfriend and I were in Asheville this past Saturday visiting from Tennessee. We went to Riverside Cemetery because I’m a photographer and I love historical places. We were standing close to the bottom of the hill, near the veterans’ memorial, when I heard a distant but distinctly loud bang. At first, I thought it was a gunshot, but I managed to convince myself it was a branch falling onto another branch in the woods… until I googled “haunted riverside cemetery Asheville” and read this article. I believe what I heard may have been a residual gunshot.
