Old Barlowe Street School

You are here Home  > Historical Buildings >  Old Barlowe Street School

The pre-1900 Old Barlowe Street School was more recently used for the St. Albans Haunted House Halloween Event from 1979 to 1989. But the Halloween event may have had some real haunts. Legend has it that in the 1920s, a school janitor died from a heart attack in the girls’ restroom and his spirit may still remain in the building. Witnesses have described an apparition that appeared in a south wing upstairs window, and that very window never stays closed, even when nailed shut. Cold spots, footsteps, eerie sensations and voices also have been described here.

  1. I went to the bathroom outside while at my sisters softball game. The door wasn’t locked and me and my brother couldn’t get out. We tried so hard to get out, and the door wouldn’t budge. It was the bathroom near the playground.

I did an investigation there in 2007. We heard some things, had a few interactions with the elevator, but the best experience was seeing a softball-sized orb of light form and float along the ceiling in a room on the top floor.

  3. I clean there now, Because of the after school program and at night is the the worst.. So I make sure I’m there in the morning so I don’t go at night, At night freaks me out in there..
