I think he may be referring to the revenge killings of Samuel Nichols and his son Cromwell (spelling?) NicholsNichols that occurred at the Nichols home on or about March 8, 1865. A second son, Austin, had his jaw blown off, was left for dead, yet he survived.
My ancestor, Celestine Josiah Ward, perpetrated the murders to avenge the lynching of his (said to be all 7 brothers, but 2 are confirmed.) During the civil war.
Celestine is said to have asked the 3 Nichols men to “step out of this house so I won’t have to kill you in front of your children.”
He is also implicated the killing of several other men (approx 5 others) who were also part of the lynching of his brothers.
Celestine went on to die an old man, the father of 17 children. Apparently, whenever someone would try to prosecute him, Celestine would just burn down the courthouse. ( possibly as many as 14 acts of arson between the killings of March 1864 and Celestine’s death in 1891.)

Greetings from Germany. My 2nd and 3rd Grandfathers, Samuel and his son Coval Nichols were murdered by Teen Ward, who was Covals’ brother in law. Covals’ brother Austin was shot through the mouth and played dead in order to survive. According to our family history, and that means from Teen Wards sister Sarah, who was my 2nd Grandmother and she was there when it happened. Her brothers with hanged by a CSA Cavalry Unit that was starving, and so they killed a few cattle that belonged to the Ward family, when the two Ward brothers protested, they were beaten and hung. The Ward family were Creek Indians, and that may also have something to do with that action. According to our family, Coval and his father Sam were members of the CSA 1st Florida Infantry Home Guard, and they had tried to stop the hangings of the Ward brothers but were threatened also by the CSA cavalry commander. This action was a total misunderstanding and Teen Ward (my 2nd Great Uncle) over reacted. To this day, there is still a family feud between the Ward and Nichols family because of this unnecessary action. All the best to you and your family. Larry D. Nichols .

I started some genealogy a few years back, and read an article about the murder. I didn’t have as much information as you do. We are distant relatives. When I first started genealogy, I came into contact with a very nice gentleman named Ron Ward. He wrote a small book you should be able to view online. The name of the book is “The Ward’s and Baker’s: Pioneer’s of North West Florida” I was able to view it through Google. If you see this, then I would enjoy hearing any other stories you may have heard. If you are on Ancestry you can see all the work that Mr. Ron Ward has done with our family tree. I hope you see this.

This home is in my neighborhood and quiet honestly the whole neighborhood especially that side of it is haunted in my opinion there are strong evil angry and sad overwhelming darkness looming near this home I’ve lived just down the opposite end of the street from there and at first I thought it was native Americans spirits and I finally realized this was slave land there were tons of slaves housed here I could only imagine the horrific things that happened right where my feet touch the same soil as many others before myself

I’ve sold the place two years ago,Myself I’m spirit photographer, Myself every night while living there of 35 years,I went out everynight from 7pm until 4am taking photographs, I believe the Nichols family spirit lives on this piece of property, I’m going to Wright a book about the property, William W Anderson homesteaders 164 acres of land from the curve on Nichols creek to the other side of the lake,way the way north to b highway 90 is today 164 acres of property, his Son Ablert L. Anderson sold the 164 acres to Robert Rolla & his brother,Robert has passed already,when the Pensacola Gazette newspaper printed about our story all hell broke loose,If you go to Land Deed Office behind McDonald’s asked to look into the Santa Rossa cemetery book I think not sure page 154 it has the name of Nichols Lake Cemetery, Nichols Lake the changed part of the Nichols Lake to Nichols Creek cased in 1992 to many people was living in the same road for 911 , Check it out have them make you a copies of the location of the cemetery location, it’s reads from these two grave sites once old Black Cemetery called the Old Holly Cemetery, have them copy you an Ariel shot it’s shows the old black cemetery was at 5123 Nichols Lake rd which is now Nichols creek.
