Minnesota State Capitol

You are here Home  > Historical Buildings >  Minnesota State Capitol

The Minnesota State Capitol was completed in 1905, replacing an older building that had burned down. Witnesses have described unexplained noises that come from the second story, cold gusts of air, and apparitions of deceased senators and governors in the halls and stairways. Something may be strange about Room 217 as well: Several folks have been locked in to this former judge’s office.

  1. Before there was any Capitol building on this site, IT WAS A CEMETERY!!! Did they move aALL the bodies? You tell me! My understanding is that this burial ground held the city’s “potter’s field” for the unidentified and unclaimed, the kind of folks who had no friends or relatives to object or see that their remains were respectfully relocated…

  2. This Capitol building’s campus was built over an old cemetery! Supposedly all the burials were removed and reinterred in other boneyards but who knows? My understanding was that this site contained the city’s “potter’s field” for the unknown, unclaimed and indigent– the kind of folks who are unlikely to have caring survivors to see to their final resting places! Things can get a bit lax in those kind of circumstances. One question for the historians out there: were there judicial offices or court rooms in the Capitol? Usually a co-equal branch of government has its own quarters, like a separate stand-alone court house…

  3. I remembered seeing a man in a bow tie and neat black suit almost like a tuxedo during a tour in elementary here. He was tall, with greying hair. He was on a different level from us on the tour, and I remember asking the tour guide if the place was haunted. I think I remember her saying no, but the man looked very out of place, even for a 7 or 8 year old.

  4. The Mn Capitol Building is haunted. I currently work there on the complex. Behind the court chambers there is a hallway and a room we call the white room. There is a ghost in that area. There is a ghost on the 2nd floor near the double elevators. There is a ghost in the public galleries on the 3rd floor. And as well as the 1st floor near the rotunda. The basement tunnel area there are a few. I’ve heard voices, foot steps in various area of the basement. That’s not the only building on the MN Capitol that is haunted. All the ghosts are good. There is not malicious feeling from them, even though it gives me the creeps etc. The State Office Building is also haunted. The Judicial Center is haunted. All three buildings are haunted. The MN History Center is haunted as well. Although it was built in 1991. It is in the old site of Miller Hospitol.

In the 1960’s there was a Highway Patrol dispatched naked Helen Dutton. She went on her break one shift and never came back. She went in the bathroom and died there
