Milford Historical Society

You are here Home  > Historical Buildings >  Milford Historical Society

All three of the Colonial buildings that make up the Milford Historical Society are rumored to be haunted. The oldest of the three, the Eells-Stow House is believed to be haunted by former occupant and heroic town doctor Captain Stephen Stow, who died in 1777 after caring for 200 soldiers with smallpox. Folks say they can feel the doctor’s presence at his house, and electronic voice phenomena have been recorded. The 1785 Bryan-Downs House reportedly houses disembodied voices and invisible spirits. Some visitors have said that the entities physically touched them. And the 1659 Clark-Stockade House is home to similar strange happenings, as well as the sound of ghostly babies crying.

  1. It’s definitely haunted. I work there and some of the spirits get pretty lively. Sometimes they can be a nuisance but you kinda love them at the same time- they’re a little like coworkers. And who else can say they work with ghosts? I think it’s pretty neat. They’re a part of the houses; a part of the history itself.
I won’t get into specific incidents but if you’re ever in the big bedroom in the Eells-Stow house, sniff around a bit. It sometimes smells like a woman’s sweet perfume.
