Latta Plantation

You are here Home  > Historical Buildings >  Latta Plantation

The Latta family, the former owners of the plantation, are said to still live here in their afterlife. The historic site is the setting for strange occurrences, like the sound of ghostly children playing in the empty attic or slamming doors. A shadowy figure is seen from time to time. It is said that once during a tour, a cane that had belonged to a Latta family member was being shown, and it got up on its own and moved about as if something unseen was walking with it.

    1. I volunteer every now and then at this place and have witness paranormal activity. If you stand by the bed upstairs you start feeling chest pain and hard to breathe. We were down by the mine and a lamp flew across the room without breaking.

    2. I went there a few years ago and I had no idea about the history of it prior to attending a tour. The second I walked into the house I knew it was haunted. I heard kids laughing and running in the attic.

    3. Maybe 10 years ago I was upstairs In the attic working on the a/c unit had my back to the door putting the cover back on heard someone walking up to me thought it was my boss I started talking but no answer I looked behind me and no one I looked out the window him and the lady that let us in was outside I got chills dropped my drill and ran. the lady told me it was the play room …wish I could investigate this place…

    4. We visited this location for a Civil War Re-enactment. When we were leaving we decided to go to an old graveyard that was right across the street from the Plantation. We were there for about 15 minutes when we heard this screeching scream coming from the woods. There was absolutely no one there. We ran until we reached out car and no one said a word for a few minutes. We had to process what had just happened. I am convinced this place is truly haunted. I took a picture prior to entering the gates…visit at your own risk!

    5. I was working here for an event and was alone in the Alexander cabin when I heard footsteps upstairs. I go up there and no one was there, I was alone in the building. I still love the place and go anytime I can

    6. I was there for a field trip when i was little and we went into the dining room and were passing around the old eating utensils when i felt something/ or someone put there hands on my shoulder but no one was there…. i knew right when i walked into the house it was haunted. I am very sensitive to paranormal energies.

    7. I occasionally fish Mountain Island Lake and take the Washing Rock Trail. This particular time I felt an uneasiness hiking the trail to the lake almost as if someone was following me. I brushed it off, went fishing for about 2 hours and started my hike back to the parking lot. I recently quit smoking and started using a vape. As I was walking, I had my vape, my towel and my phone in my hands. I was taking pictures of the foliage along the way with my phone and had to put my towel and vape down a couple of times on the trail. I arrived back to my vehicle and realized that I must have left my vape on the trail because I could not find it anywhere. I ended up scouring the trail, my car, my purse and my backpack for my vape and assumed someone found it and picked it up. Four days later, I was walking to my car to go to work, unlock my car, and saw my vape neatly placed on my drivers side seat. I still can’t shake the eeriness of this experience.

    8. I went on a field trip, around the age of like 9-10 with my school to this plantation. I’m very sensitive to paranormal energies and this was by far one of the coolest and creepiest trips I’ve ever been on. I’m a little bit of an adrenaline junkie so I love going to see haunted places and movies and such, but nothing beats Latta. When we went I went with most of my student body, and we had a whole tour of the property. I don’t remember a lot of the details of the tour, but I vividly remember being in a living room or bedroom, a large room upstairs listening to stories about the house. While we were up there we heard little kids laughing and running around almost in the attic. We asked what it was and they denied hearing it. While we were walking through another bedroom the door slammed behind us. Nobody was near the door so it really didn’t make sense why it would slam like that, and to be honest most of us third graders were too scared to be pulling practical pranks like that so I really don’t believe that anyone would be playing around with us. In one of the bedrooms the closer you got the bed the harder it was to breathe and it made me cry. In one of the smaller houses on the land we all definitely heard knocks on the walls, we never could figure out of someone was doing it on purpose but we all swear to hearing it. Over all it’s an experience I just can’t remember and I would love to go back now that I’m older.
