Kingston Penitentiary has a ghostly prisoner, George Hewell, who was, in life, a handful for the guards. He was known for attacking guards and other inmates, and in one incidence in 1897, a guard was forced to kill Hewell in self defence. Hewell swore as he lay dying that he would avenge himself. Since then, the ghost of Hewell has been seen here many times. The place has been featured on “Creepy Canada.”

My fiancé and I went in October 2017 to the Kingston Pen tour! I was aware that it was haunted but my main focus to be there was purely history so even entering the place I didn’t think to myself ‘I hope I see some ghosts’ that thought never crossed my mind. We went to the first room of the tour, the room was for the inmates to see their familie, there were old paintings on the wall and a display case of old artifacts and such. In this room while the guide was speaking I started having the hardest time breathing, there was an insane amount of pressure on my chest. I didn’t think ‘oh it’s a ghost’ but I was so confused and thinking something was wrong with me medically. Once we left that room and the feeling went away did I think ‘okay that was weird’ and I decided then that it was something paranormal. I did get that feeling again, although I don’t remember exactly where, it was either in the circular room/hallway where you can see all the cells, or in some jail cells. But yes that’s my only experience.
