Historic Alma House

The “Historic Alma House” at the Silverton Inn of the Rockies was built in 1898. It was built as a Inn for Mining and Train executives. High in the Mountains, Silverton was once a bustling mining town. The Durango Silverton Railroad ran between towns. These were rough times, with saloons and a Red Light district. There were shootings, mine accidents, avalanches and being snow bound as just a few causes of untimely deaths. There are several reports of sightings, movements and sounds at the Alma House.

Voices are heard, a woman in a window, switches turned off, and feelings of a presence by those who say they are sensitive to such things.

  1. One guest woke up to see a woman in Victorian era clothing staring at him in his room. Made for great conversation the next morning at breakfast!

  2. we slept in the attic room, when we were shown to our room the innkeeper told us that when the inn was first opened a school teacher lived in that room. my mom said that while she was putting my baby brother to sleep she heard a motherly type voice asking ” what do you want me to teach your children?” my mom was so freaked out that she left the hotel and checked in to a hotel in durango leaving the rest of my family for the night. around 4:00 am i woke up to find a woman in early 1900s era nightgown laying in the bed right next to me. I had my mom pick us up and take us to her hotel.

    • Dear Anna, as the Innkeepers we are so sorry you did not enjoy your stay. We don’t recall this particular episode and we sincerely wish you had brought it to our attention. It is extremely rare for our “residents” to spook our guests and if you had a bad experience we are eager to make it right.
I don’t show a Anna Ellison booking a room with us in September 2018 so I am unable to offer a refund. You are welcome to email us at : InnoftheRockies@hotmail.com so we can fix this.
      Thank you

  3. The Historic Alma House actually has three spirit residents. Bridget Hughes, a School Marm and a gentleman we call The General. All are docile and do not interfere with the peaceful guest experience. We have never had any guests experience fear or feel uncomfortable knowing these three are permanent residents. The Historic Alma House has always been a boarding house, Inn, hotel or B&B operating consistently since 1898 so you can imagine the fantastic energy that exists.
We invite all to come on up to Silverton, let Betty the Innkeeper take you for a tour and if you are blessed, will decide to stay for a visit.

  4. It’s an amazing place to stay I have stayed here many times with my grandma and never have felt uncomfortable with the presence of the spirits that reside, The few experiences I have had with the spirits have only been positive and are an important part of this hotel and the story’s from guests about the women in the victorian I have been told show it’s unlikely to witness her for yourself and if you did she doesn’t want to scare you she’s pearly just interested in something about you and if you make it clear that your frightened by her presence she will disappear and will not witness her again and I truly believe that the spirits here truly care about the hotel and guests experiences and will never do anything to frighten anyone who chooses to stay at this amazing hotel

My husband and I have stayed at the Alma House over the years. It’s been a long time since our last stay. We would always stay in room 7, the Prospector room. Okay here goes tour experience. OneThanksgiving night, we arrived very late at night after a long drive. We called to let the Alma House host know that we had arrived. She said to go ahead and let ourselves into the house. We entered in quietly, not to wake other guests. We went straight to bed. We both fell into a deep sleep. All of a sudden a radio went off loudly and it sounded like it wasn’t tuned in. My husband jumped out of bed, it startled both of us. The radio was coming from the other room across from ours. The door was open so my husband walked in to turn it off. While he was in there, I heard several footsteps on the second floor above us. Obviously, the radio woke everyone up. The next morning we met the host, she served us a great breakfast. We started chatting and told her about the radio incident. I said it woke up the guests upstairs, above us. She freaked out and told us we were alone, the only guests staying there! I explained hearing footsteps and she said her daughter saw something one time in the upstairs room. The next time we stayed at the Alma House she was no longer there. We told the story to the new host who also was freaked out and said she had experiences. We love the Alma House and plan on staying there again someday.
