General Wayne Inn

You are here Home  > Restaurants and Bars >  General Wayne Inn

This onetime inn and tavern on the National Register of Historic Places is said to be haunted by several entities. In the 1704 building, named for General “Mad” Anthony Wayne who once stayed here, folks have seen the spirits of a Hessian soldier, a British officer looking for a locket, and of literary great Edgar Allan Poe, who frequently stayed there as well. Also reported have been poltergeist activity and screams. The place has been featured on TV’s Unsolved Mysteries and Haunted History. Reports say that the building is no longer an inn, but a synagogue and Jewish activity center.

  1. This is no longer an Inn. the last business of that sort failed back in the 90’s when one partner murdered another by shooting him in the cellars.

  2. Expanding on what Paul said: they had a hard time selling the place after the murder because while Hessian soldiers and British officers are cool ghosts that attract guests, murdered business partners are really not. When the price went low enough, it was sold to Chabad of the Main Line, a Chasidic Jewish group that holds services there regularly, Jewish holiday events and Jewish educational programs. I have been there many times. I don’t know if they would be open to people who want to ghost visit.

While it was an restaurant, my husband’s work party was there. Except for the “dance floor, bar” area, especially in the halls and the ladies restroom the air was horribly, “heavy”. If any of you know that feeling, you understand. Shortly thereafter the party…less than a month I’d say one owning partner murdered his other partner on the site.

  4. I lived in Wynnewood for over 30 years. We visited the general Wayne inn when we first moved there back in 1979. I ‘felt’ the ghosts/spirits immediately and while standing by the bar, something kept tapping me on my shoulder, and there was no one around. I also saw people dancing upstairs. (I think it was upstairs, but I could be remembering that part wrong.) We had gone there to look at the possibility of renting out a room for a reception. So yes, I totally believe the place was haunted.
