Flager Mansion - Whitehall

Henry Flagler, one of the founders of Standard Oil, built Whitehall for his third wife, Mary Lily Kenan.

The site of the home was purchased for $50,000 in 1893 by Flagler; later surveyed for construction in July 1900 and the home completed in time for Flagler and his wife to move in on February 6, 1902. The architects were Carrère and Hastings, who had earlier designed the Ponce de Leon Hotel and several other buildings in St. Augustine for Flagler. Whitehall was to be a winter residence, and Henry gave it to Mary Lily as a wedding present. They would travel to Palm Beach each year in one of their own private railcars, one of which was No. 91.

Flagler died of injuries sustained in falling down a flight of marble stairs at Whitehall in 1913, at the age of 83. Mary Lily died four years later.

There are general stories about ghosts and strange eerie presences throughout the mansion.

    1. Nothing spooky, just that I along with 2-3 of my friends would clime up to the pool on the south end of the prop and swim in the pool till the gard run us off. Last I saw was that a train car is sitting where the pool was. This time period was when I was about 11 years old. I am now 69. The best time of my life was in WPB Allen

    2. Spent three days there in ’78 or ’79 because of work we were doing inside the property. we had access to the entire home which was normally restricted to visitors. There were three of us that witnessed some very creepy stuff. One thing that we all saw was an ancient Ming vase that was pushed off a very large stable marble base. This vase was about 4 ft. tall and heavy and thick, not goin down without some serious force upon it. our boss was worried the museums curator would blame us for it even though we were all on the other side of the massive house. In a very calm manner he told us stuff like that happens on occasion so no big deal. A couple of us asked him the next day if he had also seen any scary things in the museum. He replied that he hadn’t seen anything but heard voices from time to time even when he was the only person in the house.

    3. It is very unlikely that it is haunted. However, the paintings can seem demonic, and the layout could be in a horror movie. People died here

    4. My friend and I witnessed a couple of unexplained things while visiting the Flagler House. While in the ladies room it was just my friend and I in there. While washing our hands we heard the toilet flush in an empty stall the sink started to run as if an unseen entity was rinsing their hands. A bit stunned but not scared we left and were standing in the hallway waiting for our husbands when the door next to us just opened and then closed as if our unseen bathroom buddy was just going about their business. Who ever the spirit might have been if it was a spirit didn’t give us a bad feeling but they did give us a good story.

    5. We took my Mom there for mothers day outing about 8 years ago. During the tour we stayed out on the veranda by a line a guest rooms. At one point we were laughing a kidding about all the parties they must have had. All at once all the doors that were opened for 5 rooms slammed shut. No wind. We just moved along and caught up with the tour.
