Claremont Hotel Club and Spa

In the late 1800s, this site contained a castle-like home, but in 1901 it burned to the ground. The Claremont Hotel opened in 1915, and to this day, folks say they can smell smoke in their smoke-free rooms. On the fourth floor, said to be the most haunted, witnesses report flickering lights and TVs that come on by themselves. The culprit is said to be the ghost of a little girl who died there at age 6, either in the hotel or in the fire. Her apparition has been glimpsed; her favorite room is Room 422.

  1. This is spooky back in 1991 my then boyfriend and I stayed at The Claremont and we are both non-smokers and requested a non-smokers room/floor. At first it was fine we put our belongings up and went downstairs to spa and restaurants. When we got back undressed and was lying in bed watching a movie we both smelled smoke did not see it just smelled it… it was really thick and smokey smelling my eyes started to burn I called the front desk and was a little upset…….but the hotel representative insisted we were on a smoke free floor……Now I get it…I never thought about it being haunted……..

  2. My wife and I stayed on the fourth floor of the Claremont in room 418 for one night. In the middle of the night the bathroom light turned on by itself. At about 2:30 A.M. I felt a quick slap on my lower back which startled me. When we woke up in the morning the coffee pot in the room was on and it was not plugged into the electrical socket. My wife turned on the shower and the hot water and cold water were reverse. The most bizarre incident was when I checked my iPhone. The time on my iPhone was one (1) hour behind the time indicated on the room clock and my wife’s iPhone!

  3. True, it’s haunted. I worked there for 4 years and the fourth floor is the worst. I’ve never actually seen anything but certainly heard noises and seen elevators go up and down without the push of a button.

  4. So me and my family were staying there for one night and we heard romors about the 4 floors and me and my mom decided to go check it out at 12:00 and so we sat at the step and as soon as we sit we feel a big cold breeze and there was no air conditioner near by and my mother said” if there are spirits here make a sign you are hear” and as soon and she said it the elevator opened and said going down and we got so scared we left and so this hotel is really haunted

  5. The hotel is defiantly haunted . I worked @ the hotel for 6+ yrs. Most staff know yet are discouraged from speaking on it. I have been told of encounters by both staff and hotel guests alike. Most activity takes place on the 4th floor. Room 422 has the most reported phenomenon. Complaints of loud children & construction sounds late at night. The elevators choose their own destinations on a regular basis and open without the buttons being pressed. There have been more deaths on the property than mentioned above. During the early 1930’s on a Valentine’s evening a man strangled a woman & then shot himself dead . The little girl was living in the hotel in the 40’s with her Mother when she went missing, she was found 2 days later, dead in the laundry chute. In 1955 a 13 yr old was kidnapped on the property near the tennis courts. Her body was found later, her death was the result of murder.

  6. Yes its haunted! Ten years ago a boyfriend and i booked for spa pampering and stay here for my Birthday. When we drive up it looked like a beautiful castle and familiar even though it was our first visit. We checked in about 3pm and went up to our room. My boyfriend checked out the room while i used the bathroom. I locked the door and was on the toilet when the bathroom door swung up open as if kicked in. Thinking it was my boyfriend, i yelled “quit it”and scolded him. He then walked in confused. (It wasnt him who had done that). I tried to justify and find an explanation. But the windows were closed. No wind in the room and the door was still locked. We then just shrugged it off. We went to our massage appt downstairs. When we got back to our room. I jumped in the shower and felt as if someone was watching me or inside the shower with me. I thought i was being paranoid. I asked my boyfriend to keep me company while in the shower until i was done. My boyfriend was complaining about the TV turning on and off as he was trying to watch a game. So he called downstairs to roomservice to fix the problem. They sent the handyman but could not find any problem. He chuckled and said “its just the claremont ghost” and left. It made us feel creepy but whatever. We then went out to eat and while having dinner it hit me! I had seen this place on TV Californias 10 most hanted Place. Thats why it looked familiar. I was mortified, my bf was acting brave and said who cares lets enjoy our time. So i tried, i left a lamp on and TRIED to go to sleep although i kept waking up in the middle of the night feeling like someone was watching us from a corner of the room. When we finally left my bf confessed he was as scared as i was but was trying to keep his composure. You can feel something odd even when you walk in the halls. I loved the Spa but NEVER would i stay overnight again.

  7. I stayed here last Valentine’s Day with my boyfriend and we were on the third floor. We were laying bed, talking and watching TV around 2:00 or 3:00 in the moring when the sink randomly turned on in the bathroom. We both looked at each other in bewilderment, but we didn’t really think anything of it. We heard weird noises coming from the bathroom for the rest of the night, but we didn’t bother to check because we figured they might have been coming from another room. I had no idea the hotel was haunted until I looked it up online after our visit and seen that other people had experienced similar accounts, including famous basketball teams that have stayed there as well.

  8. Last year, my husband, my son and I stayed in the room next door to 422. We had no idea that there was any paranormal history at the Claremont, nor are we the kind of people who believe in ghosts. One evening, my husband smelled smoke when he walked into our room. Neither of us thought anything about it, as there was clearly no fire and I didn’t smell it. That night, he thought he saw a young girl in the window looking into our room. Later, he was awoken by what sounded like nails scratching on the walls by his side of the bed. I didn’t experience any of these things until I was getting ready for a meeting early in the morning. It was almost 5am, and I was in the bathroom when I heard what sounded like feet running and stomping in the room above us. Later on, I mentioned our experiences to a colleague who told me that the hotel was haunted. She showed me several articles of people who experienced the exact thing we were! The next morning, I was getting ready for work again at around the same time. This time, it was silent. I muttered to myself, “See? It’s not haunted.” Then I heard one big stomp above me, followed by running up and down in the room upstairs again. Yes, it’s haunted!

  9. I stayed at the Claremont Hotel several years ago for a work meeting. My room was on the 4th floor. The first night I heard loud noises coming from the floor above me. Sounded like furniture being moved. The second night we went out for dinner and returned late. When I was unlocking the room, a little girl’s voice said “mommy” right next to my ear. I found out later there’s no rooms above the 4th floor and that a little girl died there
